You are what you eat…

With my wedding fast approaching, I cannot help myself but read every magazine, every statistic, how-to and helpful hints out there involving white dresses, flowers, candy, decorations and champagne toasts.

I cannot help but spend some of my spare time immersing myself into the pretty pictures full of ideas and must-haves for my big day. Among the most popular searches and helpful hints out there are ways to “get that bride-full body,” exercise tips, and nutritional facts.

Can we say OVERLOAD!

However, it reminds me of the saying “You are what you eat.” Now I know that if I eat 27 cupcakes for breakfast I am not going to turn into a cupcake, but will happen is I am going to feel sick, my face will break out and my production level for the day will start and end at a slow pace.

{So what’s your point Ria?!?!} <– Is what you are thinking?

Even if I eat right, exercise regularly and lead a healthy lifestyle…that is not enough to be successful in my daily life…

This transcends to the company I keep.

Positive people and good intentions keep my own levels of positivity and optimism high and energized.

Negativity will eventually bring me down and affect every aspect of my life personal and professional.

Not only are you what you eat, but you are also the company you keep.

The people in your life, purposely or haphazardly will directly or indirectly influence your day-to-day. Over time I have realized that all of these people play a role in my self-esteem. I can sit here all day and tell you that “I am strong” and “No one can bring me down” but at the end of the day people influence people.

By working out and eating a balance diet, my body will be healthy. But if I surround myself with negative thoughts and energy, eventually my mind will become polluted and contaminate my healthy lifestyle.

A well balanced livelihood not only requires attention to the body, but to the mind as well. If we all pay attention to our actions and make the decision to act and react in a progressive fashion, than we all have a better shot at positively influencing each others’ lives.

So, now you are wondering how this plays into the real world? A potential career? Work life?

I will answer those questions next time…but I will leave you with this REAL piece of advice:

When you prep your body physically and mentally for success, you are prepared  to handle stress and disappointment without devastating your well-being.

  2. Sort of related: I live with three other girls at the moment, and the one who most recently moved in shares a lot of my healthy living views. The longer we’ve lived together, the more we’ve fed off of each other’s healthy-eating neuroses; we once stood in the kitchen for a half hour together reading the ingredient list on a box of flax seed crackers, trying to figure out if they were actually healthy or not. I absolutely love having somebody to dish about this stuff with (and we’re always helping each other discover new foods and new healthy cooking tricks), but we both have to keep in check with getting out of control about it, and not letting it become a competition. She’s a great friend to have, because she’s positive and upbeat and empathetic; sometimes you need a person to run to and be like “I JUST ATE THREE CUPCAKES. I COULDN’T STOP. WHAT DID I DO.” who will always respond with “GIRL, you deserved all three of those cupcakes. Your butt still looks great. Have a banana tomorrow instead.”

    • TOTALLY related!! Thank you for this point of view!
It is just as important to have people positively motivate good behavior AND balance self forgiveness. Especially when we diet, we beat ourselves up when we stray from the regimen. Stay tuned for a post revolving around having your cake and eating it too!

    • Thanks Ethan! I was thinking about this topic over coffee this morning and thought it would be great to offer some encouraging thoughts as we enter midterms and break. It’s time for some “spring cleaning” in our lives to get ready to breathe in the beauty and new beginnings this season has to offer. Happy Sunday! (p.s. – I cannot wait to see more mouth-watering recipes and pics!)
